Focus on laterals

As Aarsleff Pipe Technologies has developed advanced techniques for CCTV inspection as well as renewal of laterals, many pipe owners have started to focus on the often very bad quality of many laterals. Even though the dimensions are often small and there are often bends, we are able to CCTV inspect and renew more or less all kinds of laterals without excavation.

One of the many local authorities focusing on the condition of the laterals is the City of Copenhagen. Copenhagen Energy is thus systematically inspecting and renewing laterals. The inspections have shown that in general, the condition of the laterals is worse than the condition of the main pipes. Out of the first 10,000 laterals that we inspected, approx. 25% were to be renewed.
Over the years, the traffic load has increased considerably. This has caused fractures of laterals that are often placed high in the ground, especially laterals for road shafts. In several places, more than 50% of the laterals have fractures.

Copenhagen Energy focuses especially on the laterals of all major approach roads, shopping streets and open spaces in the city centre. To avoid urgent repairs and excavations causing inconvenience to residents, business owners and traffic, Copenhagen Energy is cooperating with Aarsleff Pipe Technologies about renewal of laterals by means of Aarsleff CIPP Lining. In order to minimize the inconvenience, we often carry out renewal of laterals at night.

10-20% of the laterals are no longer being used. We automatically close off the laterals when we install Aarsleff CIPP Lining. This also reduces the risk of rats.
The extent of the project imposes requirements to a close working relationship where everybody knows their exact job.
