No-Dig solution in Ebeltoft

In the spring of 2005, the local authorities of Ebeltoft were facing an exchange of district heating mains and water conduits in the beautiful Ebeltoft pedestrian street and its adjacent streets. In connection with the project, the sewer services of the municipality carried out CCTV inspection of the sewer system in the affected streets.

Aarsleff Pipe Technologies was charged with the task of reviewing the results of the CCTV inspections to estimate whether it was possible to carry out No-Dig renewal of the wastewater system. The CCTV inspections documented that the main part of the pipe system could be renewed by means of Aarsleff Pipe Technologies’ No-Dig techniques. Actually, there were a number of good reasons for choosing a solution based on Aarsleff CIPP Lining.

First, the main pipe in the pedestrian street, Adelgade, had been lined back in the 1980s. The CCTV inspection showed that it was in a fine shape with an estimated remaining useful life of more than 80 years.

Second, the laterals to the main pipe were in a bad shape, but the CCTV inspections showed that we were able to renew most of them. Every 10th service pipe was no longer used so we were able to cancel these.

Third, the district heating mains and the water conduits were not placed particularly deep. Thus, in spite of the fact that they were to be dug up, a further excavation down to the sewers would extend the total working period significantly. Furthermore, excavation of laterals close to the old houses would be problematic and also cause a lot of inconvenience to the citizens and traders in the area.

Last but not least, the choice of No-Dig techniques meant that the local authorities of Ebeltoft were able to save approximately 70% on their budget.

We renewed a total of 80 laterals by means of Aarsleff Hat Profile. Out of the 80 laterals, 40 had an average length of 3 metres whereas the last 40 were minor laterals.
